European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
